#54: My life since September

So it's been a while since my last post...and looking back at my most recent posts, I realize that I haven't really said much about the big changes that have gone on in my life. So for anyone who cares at all, here we go.

On October 31, 2014, I brought cupcakes to Twin Cities Orthopedics for my final staff potluck.  Halloween was my last day working at TCO because I got a job at St. Catherine University!  I can't believe I didn't post about this already... anyway, its been 7 months at St. Kate's and I love it.  I very specifically remember visiting St. Kate's (then the College of St. Catherine, we didn't become a university until 2009) during a very stormy afternoon in the summer with my mom and Liz.  Tree branches were down on our way to campus.  The sky was green.  I just remember walking through the Coeur de Catherine (student center) with its window lined wall looking out at the horrible weather.  Obviously, I did not choose to attend St. Kate's (nor do I think I even applied) and I ended up falling in love with St. Mary's University.  It is interesting to look at these two schools now and see the major differences between the two Catholic institutions- I was nervous and felt a little forced about the thought of chapel and the Catholic history at St. Mary's but I definitely do not feel that vibe here at St. Kate's.  At the time of my school search, I also did not understand the appeal of a women's college.  Now that I'm on campus, I love it.  This is such an encouraging and supportive environment- everyone here from the students I have met to the faculty to the staff are so freaking nice.  I work in the office of graduate admission with 10 women and 1 man.  It is such a shift from my previous work-life that it is hard to explain.  While I do sometimes miss the antics and unpredictability of crazy patients, it is nice to have a job where I don't get yelled at on a regular basis.

My job is to work with admissions for a couple grad programs.  I was originally hired just for the Master of Social Work program.  Then a coworker quit and I needed more to do so I acquired the Master of Arts in Occupational Therapy and Occupational Therapy Doctorate programs.  Then I still needed more to do so I took on the Master of Arts in Interpreting Studies in Communication Equity (its a mouthful) when the program came into existence this month.  I sign up for and track travel and recruitment events.  I plan 8 graduate information sessions for all our programs throughout the year.  This is really such an interesting job- I honestly was set on undergraduate admission but after working the past few months with graduate admission, I can easily say I'm happy to be here.  Graduate students want to be here.  They want to do the work, they want to be part of our programs- it is interesting to see the differences between my programs and the people who are applying to them.  So this has been quite a good experience thus far AND they're sending me to Vegas next month for a professional conference so I can't complain.

I turned 27 in January- Trudy and I had a 90s themed birthday party where we went to a few bars in NE Minneapolis.  It was a fun night- I now own a neon green fanny pack that I almost took out for a run yesterday (and might still as it is very convenient!).

In March I started going out on dates with this nice guy named Matt who I met on Tinder, believe it or not.  He is the 4th person named Matt that I have been out with in the past year and I find that to be amusing but also not surprising since it was a popular name back in the late 80s.  He's the best Matt, that's for sure.  So when I made the new year of life resolution to "ditch the dating websites" I did for a while but then got bored and re-downloaded Tinder.  I'm pretty glad that I did.  We've been "Facebook official" since the end of April.  We are heading to Summerfest in Milwaukee next week to see one of his favorite bands, Sloan.  He's almost as bad at golf as I am.  He is slightly allergic to cats but doesn't seem to mind coming over to my house.  He's tall and cute and I like him a lot.  So that's a plus.

Trudy moved out of our townhouse this past weekend.  She had been slowly moving boxes and things out but when I got back from working at VB on Saturday, her food shelf in the kitchen was cleared off and her mail holder was gone and I suddenly realized that she was officially leaving me.  She slept over Saturday night after a party with our neighbors and took Landshark with her on Sunday.  I think I'm projecting sadness and confusion onto Marvel- he's a cat, I'm sure he's fine.  But I bet he misses his friend... he's only ever lived at our house with Landshark.  Luckily, she's coming back for the 4th of July weekend and then I think I'm going to foster when I get back from Vegas.  So he'll have friends again.  Also I miss Trudy but she can drive and has a key to our house so I know I'll be seeing her still.

I decided to start the Whole 30 again as of yesterday (so be prepared for more blogging about what I'm eating).  Sure the Whole 30 is restrictive and I think it did me more harm than good last year when I did it but I need rules and strict guidelines in order to make any lifestyle changes and that's what the Whole 30 does for me.  Here's hoping that this time around I actually get more energy like it promises (didn't happen last time) and I lose some weight (I'm also going to start working out again).  I am frustrated in myself because this time last year, I looked and felt GOOD.  So the good news is that Matt likes me like this (but he also hasn't known my skinnier self).  The bad news is that I'm sick of this weight I've gained and being lazy and losing that awesome feeling I had last year.  So it is back to the grind for me.  I signed up for a 5K in September that I actually plan to RUN (or at least jog fast) so I need to train for that.  I started and had a good two weeks of going to the gym and hopping on the treadmill but my knees are bad and I lost my motivation pretty fast.  I'm also doing a 16-mile bike ride with my dad in August that I did last year when I was still relatively fit so if I don't get my act together, I'll never make it up the ridiculously steep hill like I did last year.  My former trainer at LA Fitness told me we should meet up to lift at our current gym, Anytime Fitness, just as friends so I'm excited about that.  And Anytime is awesome because you can literally go to workout at ANY TIME.  I went a couple weeks ago at 10:30 and was the only person in there but it was great and only a little creepy.

Anyway, here's a few other things I did so far in this first HALF of 2015:
* Had brunch at Pizza Luce for our birthdays and Trudy and I wore the same dress because we're cute like that
* Knocked a bunch more breweries off my list!
* Got Liz to try and ENJOY alcohol (Minneapolis Mule at Tavern on France- turns out she likes whiskey)
* Went on a North Shore brewery tour with Maggie and my friends at Get Knit
* Baked cupcakes for orders even though I said I was going to quit baking cupcakes for orders
* Saw the movie Jupiter Ascending two nights in a row even though it was really not a good movie
* Went to two TCO clinic openings (for free food and giveaways, obviously)
* Wore lipstick for a couple of occasions.  I don't do that often but it is quite a confidence booster!
* Learned the magic of a puffle- puff pastry stuffed with things and cooked in a waffle iron
* Attended my first college fair representing St. Kate's by myself!
* Started giving the all-grad presentation to the full group of people who attend our info sessions (usually between 75 and 150 people)
* Discovered my love for iced chai tea (and unfortunately learned how many calories and how much sugar are in such a beverage)
* Took a BUNCH of cute selfies
* Attended a men's roller derby bout
* Went out for two bachelorette parties
* Saw Andy Grammer in concert with Nina.  We'll be seeing him again this summer at the fair!
* Went for an actual run with my dog
* Toured St. Paul breweries with Maggie and Becky on the Brews & Buses adventure with Get Knit
* Went to the Twins home opener with my girl Christina
* Took a million pictures of the cats
* Did some home improvement projects like painting a chalkboard wall and hanging shelves for the cats (two of which fell off the wall, one of which Marvel was sitting on when it happened)
* Celebrated the love of Erin and Kyle and made a bunch of new friends at the reception
* Took photo booth pictures in a VW van turned into a photo booth.  Real life, people.
* Volunteered for a residence life conference at NDSU over Memorial Day weekend
* Threw Liz an epic 25th birthday party where we marathon-watched Avatar the Last Airbender for 3 days
* Saw the International Space Station in the sky
* Took Marvel outside on a leash multiple times.  Big mistake as now he wants to go outside all the time.  Oh well.
* Watched the Twins get beaten by the Brewers (who were the worst team in their league at the time) but it was okay because it pleased my boyfriend and made for an extra special birthday (but secretly it is very upsetting that we lost... two games in a row)
* Started watching The West Wing on Netflix- it is probably one of the best shows that was ever on TV and I'm only on season 2.
(this started as a list of just a few things but I've been busy so it turned into more than a few... #sorrynotsorry)

A Few of My Favorite Things: Beauty Products

Don't hate me (you'll hate me) but this is pretty much all I use for a normal beauty routine.  Just thought I'd share a few of my favorite products.  You can find # 1, 2 and 4 at Sephora.  #3 is at drug stores everywhere and #5 is in hair salons and probably Ulta.  #6 you can find at most grocery stores (Trader Joe's!) and #7 you can buy at Kiehl's stores (MOA) or Nordstrom and Macy's.

1. Benefit "Fake Up" Concealer
For real.  This is the best under-eye concealer ever.  I'm a little biased because I never used a concealer before this but I started because the bags under my eyes were driving me nuts.  This is creamy and soft and pats onto my face so smoothly.  It comes in 3 shades and I use the light because I am so pale.  It definitely brightens my face and doesn't make me look so tired.

2. Soap & Glory "Flake Away" Body Polish
I have always had bumps on my arms that I couldn't figure out how to get rid of.  Trudy actually turned me on to this stuff.  Its an exfoliator that says it will make your scaly legs less reptilian but I've been using it on my arms and it is a miracle worker.  Because it was in the shower at my parents' house, my mom and sister starting using it too and they are having the same amazing effects.  It has a nice scent too that carries throughout the day after I use it in the shower.  If I could use it on my face, I would (but I think its too course for that).

3. Burt's Bees Beeswax Lip Balm
Duh.  Gotta have my Burt's Bees.  I have like 4 versions (honey, pomegranate, grapefruit, sun screen...) but the classic is my favorite.

4. Benefit "They're Real!" Mascara
I love trying new mascara.  I'm really picky about the brush style and size.  I got a sample of this, probably from Sephora, and ended up buying a full tube because its so great.  It is not waterproof but it seems like it and it makes my lashes look awesome.  Plus you can apparently use it horizontally and vertically but I don't totally understand what that means or how to do that.

5. Redken "Outshine 01"Anti-Frizz Polishing Milk
This is the hair product I use the most.  It makes my hair soft and light and not so frizzy.  Of course its good because its Redken, right?

6. Coconut Oil
I use this to shave.  It makes me smell like a coconut macaroon (only while I'm in the shower though, which I guess is good).  I am concerned that one of these days I am going to slip in the shower because it is slippery but so far so good.  It works wonders and smells great.

7. Kiehl's Ultra Facial Cream
I bought this 1.7 fl oz jar like 2 years ago and I'm barely halfway through it.  All it takes is a dip in with my finger and I have enough for my face after I shower.  It isn't greasy and it doesn't smell.  It has never made me break out (like other moisturizers have in the past) and it is made by a pretty awesome company.  I love it.

Look forward to more "Favorite Things" posts in the future!  This was the first one I thought of when I was staring at my medicine cabinet the other day and thinking about how much I love my "Fake Up".  Ha.

26 Things to Do Before I Turn 27

I can't believe I'm about to turn 26.  Good grief.

I did okay this past year.  Here's to hoping I do better this year!

1. Tattoo.  This has been on my list for the past 3 years.  I have an idea and know where I want it finally so maybe this will really be the year.
2. Cupcake photo shoot!
3. Dad and Mary adventure day
Golf day!  October 2014
4. Mom and Mary adventure
Spring Break! March 2014
5. Read 5 books (since evidently 10 is a stretch)
(1) Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns)
(2) Orphan Train
(3) Crazy Salad and Scribble Scribbe: Some things about women and notes on media

6. Pay off credit cards, cut them up and be done
7. Visit another country
Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic, March 2014
8. Go golfing (just once would suffice)
Yeah I've got the fancy shoes and glove and bright pink golf balls but I seriously have no idea what I'm doing.
9. EAT CLEAN
10. Spend more time with the fab five and Gibson
11. Sew the rest of the Gib's Bibs and coffee cozies that are sitting in my parents' basement
12. Go to church at least one Sunday a month
I even joined Christ United Methodist Church officially in March.  I'm so pleased.
13. Make a pom-pom rug (inspiration here)
14. Go to a concert for an artist I've never seen before (I keep going to see the same artists- time for a change!  But if Matt Nathanson is back in town in 2014, I'll be there in a heartbeat)
15. Visit a MN tourist attraction I've never been to (I'm thinking giant ball of twine...?)
16. Enter an eating contest of some sort.
American Pie Pizza eating contest, June 7, 2014- I ate 5 pieces of pizza in 12 minutes.  The winner (a woman) ate 41 pieces.  I ended up in second to last place beating the only other woman who entered.
17. Do a fun new manicure a week (#marysmanis on Instagram!)
I don't know that I did every week but I think I did a great job! These are a few of my favorites.
18. Blog once a week
19. Arm knit a scarf
20. Make an ugly Christmas sweater (I want to make one just like this)
21. Exploding egg painting (I know children are making this one but I think it would be so fun!)
22. Monthly (or more) acts of kindness like paying for coffee for the person behind me in the drive-through or leaving someone a nice note)
23. Join a CSA!  And blog about the experience
I definitely didn't do the best job blogging but I did share a CSA with my neighbors for 18 weeks.  It was a lot of work and I feel like a lot went to waste because I didn't know what to do with things or because I forgot things were in the fridge... http://missmary-collegegrad.blogspot.com/2014/09/csa-life.html
24. Reorganize our kitchen.  I have so many great ideas pinned.
25. Pub crawl.
26. Adopt a cat (hopefully it's Walker or Wayne or whatever his name is right now)
1/19/14 This happened faster than I expected.  After Walker left us, I felt like I needed a cat of my own so here is Marvel, a 7 month old black domestic shorthair.  He's cuddly and curious and clumsy and I love him.

#46: Nouns (people, places & things- obviously) that I love this Valentine's Day

My valentine Janelle, of course!  (Who, by the way, will be getting wonderful gifts in return when she least expects it!)

JT is back!  Guess who preordered his album today- this girl.

And speaking of music, 3 newly released Imagine Dragons songs!  YES PLEASE.

Bring It! Studios in Chanhassen and Peak 10.  I'm loving it for kicking my ass.

My sweet puppy.  Loving him even more today than before.

These beauties.  These are the best cupcakes I've made in some time and I'm so proud of them.

Peak 10: Week One

I finished my first week of Peak 10.  Here's a quick recap:

* I was more sore after the fitness test last Sunday than I was all week after the actual classes.
* On the first night we were told to grab a set of moderate weights (5 or 8 pounds) and a set of heavy weights (8 or 10 pounds).  I grabbed 5s and 8s to not push myself too far but those weights were in high demand so I traded up for 8s and 10s.  I was right to be confident about it!  It is a bit harder but at least I'm challenging myself with heavier weights.
* Tuesday and Thursday night classes consist of weights and cardio.  There are 5 circuits.  The first night we ran through each of them once.  The second night we ran through each of them twice with a couple of breaks.  Tomorrow we will do them twice with no breaks.  How exciting...
* Saturday morning classes are all cardio.  Its a mix of dance, a bit of kickboxing and other cardio workouts.  It was intense.
* I went to a foam roller class on Thursday after Peak 10.  They said it would "change my life".  I wasn't convinced and ended up leaving early...
* I'm supposed to supplement my 3 Peak 10 classes with an extra cardio class and an extra stretching class.  I went to yoga on Sunday morning.  It was hard.
* I should have gone to Zumba on Wednesday night (I plan to for the rest of the 8 weeks of Peak 10) but I saved the night to go on a date with a guy who changed his mind Wednesday morning.  I won't make that mistake again.
* I ate nachos on Saturday and a Dove bar on Sunday and felt ill afterwards.  I just had Domino's for dinner and I know I'll regret it later.  Hooray for eating healthy! (or at least healthier than I had been).
* I gained a pound between last Sunday and this past Sunday.  I'm displeased but Erin said that sometimes it takes two weeks to really start seeing results.
* Maybe I should be better about what I'm eating... (says the girl who had two drinks this weekend, so many Super Bowl snacks and countless M&Ms all weekend...)
* I had a crummy day and actually considered going to the gym after work because I thought it would make me feel better.  I ended up coming home to watch a movie with Liz and Trudy instead but the fact that I considered going to the gym as a pick-me-up is some sort of miracle.

So begins week two.  Here's to pushing myself harder than last week and trying to eat better than I have for the past couple of days.

25 Things to Do Before I Turn 26- The Checklist

1. Finalize my cupcake website and figure out how to get the website I made to post onto the domain I bought... it is harder than I thought it would be.
Live as of 2/25/13 thanks to some genius tech support from Liz: http://www.dearcupcakemn.com/
2. GET A TATTOO.  This is the year, people.
3. Skydive.  I also have to do this before the end of September due to the fact that I bought a Groupon.  :)
Here's a YouTube video of my dive.  YouTube says it may have audio/visual sync issues but its okay because I didn't scream so it shouldn't look/sound too weird.
4. Donate blood (I am afraid but feel compelled to do it...)
5. Take a vacation
6. Sushi and sake dinner party
7. Travel someplace new
Oshkosh, WI for Heidi & Ryan's wedding, September 28, 2013

#45: My year in pictures

1. January
I love when Liz draws pictures of Jazz.  This was a great birthday present.

This is just one of many pictures from my trip to Colorado.  I think this is my favorite because it looks as though my grandparents still lived there and Poppa had just left this spot in the office.

3. March
Party time for Phil's birthday before he became a daddy.  Yay for the cactus tower of margarita!

4. April
Sweet baby Gibson Monroe Wolpers, born on Easter.

5. May
I have no idea if this happened in May (I think it did...) but not a lot of other stuff took place this month so here's the picture I choose.  Yay for family!

6. June
In June we got to spend lots of time with Grammy Donna and the Asays!  It was a blast.

7. July
Little Miss Nina's 21st birthday bash.  Crazy!

8. August
Oh and here's that one time Nina and I ate lamb testicles...

9. September
Visiting my wonderful friends in Winona.

10. October
I think this is my favorite picture from any part of the wedding festivities- the 4 of us in a bathroom at the bachelorette party.  So fantastic.

11. November
The second roaring 20s party.  Thank goodness for Phil Wolpers and his desire to make this a tradition.

12. December
And here is family fun day where we stopped to see Allison and Gib.
